Should I stop using my r6400 v1

Netgear's website says this router is End of life.
It appears to be working fine.

At some point I am guessing it will become a security liability.

Netgear of course, would want to sell me their their latest, greatest router.
Should I keep using this router?

  • The R model routers are getting old and some are going EoL. I recommend upgrading to a RAX one and if you have a need, repurpose the R6400 for something else (extender, access point, etc).
  • Your call. The most recent update for that router was two years ago. Security updates are often there to patch holes that may never be seen in the real world. You should also have other protection in place, starting with not doing anything stupid on the Internet.

It also depends on what you do with your router. For example, if you follow the advice from microchip8 and get a newer router, your R6400 can still have its uses. Even if you don't need it as a wireless access point, it has USB ports that you can use to add USB storage to your network. Some newer routers, such as the MKxx and Orbi Mesh ranges, don't have this.

  • What speeds do you pay for?

is the router still meeting your goals?

    Are you having drops/other issues?

If its still working fine, its fine to keep using it. Yes its getting old and is EOL but if it still works fine, no point buying a new one.
