Synology VPN PPTP server constantly dropping connection in short time (using wndr3700v3 router)
Hi,
first of all, my english is poor, dont punish me.
- router wndr3700v3 (latest firmware)
- NAS synology ds214 (latest OS)
- synology VPN PPTP server (no encrypting, authentication MS-CHAP v2)
- net connectivity 240/20 (public IP)
- VPN client - standard Microsoft VPN PPTP client (OS windows 10)
i have netgear wndr3700v3 router and NAS server from synology (ds214), on both devices have latest firmware/ OS version. Internet connectivity 240/20Mbps (UPC). Sometimes i need to use a VPN connection and as this router doesnt have VPN server features (only VPN passthrough), i have to use a VPN server installed on my NAS server. So i have created PPTP VPN server, properly setup firewall on the NAS. Setup port forwarding on the router (port 1723), upnp is enabled. On my PC using standard windows VPN client.
problem:
I am able to connect to VPN, but is really slow and VPN tunnel drops connection in about 2 minutes. This problem persisting and its really annoing. I went through router and NAS setup hundred times and i really dont know what to do more for stability. My friend has the same internet provider, same speed, but using VPN server on ASUS router and it works perfectly all day and its fast.
So iam thinking, it possible that, these issues are caused by the router? On the internet its many users of synology VPN server and all of them are happy how fast and perfectly it works, but not in my case :(. So, i have found this forum, hoping that here is anyone who can help me decide whether is necessary to buy another router or help me find out whats wrong.
Thank you in advance for any reaction.

hi, just additional informations from my troubleshooting, i have tested connection stability with another VPN (my friend provided his for test purposes) and it working perfectly, so this excluded any issue on client side.
Now back to Elaine suggestion, client side is connected on wifi and router side is connected by wire in cascade with technicolor 2700 (bridge mode) ,default values of MTU size was 1400 in case of router and 1500 for VPN server settings, i have already tried to setup to the same value (1400) and it didnt help. So iam going to try lower values, i will provide feedback in few minutes. Thank you.

Wow, i wuldnt believed that the MTU size can so rapidly affect stability, it was the issue whole time. Now i just will find optimal MTU size (1200 works fine, but is more fragmented). Thank you for your time. You are best !
