guest access as secondary router

This is my first post, my first netgear router and my first day using the routher. I have been a lifelong linksys consumer.  I have the AC1900 R7300 (yes, not R7000, it is the R7300 that came with DST6501) installed as a secondary router AP with WIFI enabled.  The primary router is old linksys wrt610N router stashed in laundry room media cabinet connected to cable modem. I use the primary for 1GB ethernet only, no wifi.  So far everything appears to work well, and fast.  Some options are grayed out due to secondary router criteria.  On option that is strange is "Allow guests to see each other and access my local network."  This is grayed out out and turned on.  If I login as guest with or without a password, I can see all devices on the network - not what I want.   There isn't a notion of guest on the linksys primary router.  I upgraded to firmware V1.0.0.52_1.0.16 .    I do plan to replace the primary with another AC 1900 R7300 in the future - go them at great price at at BB.

I thought maybe to connect with ethernet, disable Access Point AP, see if I can turn off the guest sharing, etc. Any ideas?

I'm not sure that I understand what you are trying to do, but if you don't have it already, the manual for the R7300 is here:

    >>>>> R7300DST | Product | Support | NETGEAR <<<<<

There are plenty of entries for guest access.

  • In order for an AP to provide isolated guest access some means is required to isolate the traffic while it traverses the Ethernet line to the primary router.  Typically, this is done using VLANs and must be set up on both the primary router and the AP.  Well, most consumer grade routers don't provide this type of VLAN support.  Full-fledged VLAN support is usually only found on SOHO/Business-class gear.

The easiest solution is to upgrade your primary router to one with guest access.  There are affordable SOHO/Business-class as well as third-party solutions but they are less user-friendly.
