Need help to activate my router replacement from one NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 R7000 to exact same 1.

NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 R7000

  • I am NOT computer illiterate. My old Nighthawk AC1900 R7000 gave out and replaced it with the exact same model. Reason: my work requires me to use a VPN and this model is the only compatible one for the vpn service. Got a new one but I can't seem to activate it. Again, don't the exact phraseology. Help Please.

The "phraseology", as you put it, is important.

You don't need to "activate" the router to get it to work. Just follow the instrctions.

If you have saved the settings from your original R7000 you should be able to load them on to the new router. (This does not work between different models.)

I say should because a lot depends on the firmware version. There have been many releases over the 10 years life of that device. Really old ones may not be compatible with something as basic is the Nighthawk app.

If the dead one was up to date, fine.

Again, it doesn't count as activation, but some services may depend on establishing a link from the router to Netgear's cloud services. There you may need to Register the new router with MyNetgear. If you did that with the old router you should see it listed there.

If you are talking about using a particular VPN, that may need activation, but that has nothing to do with Netgear and is something that you need to work out with whoever provided that VPN. There are lots of them out there and they may differ in their ways of working. Nothing much anyone here can do for you.

Is the VPN one that is installed to the router or on your devices?

usually if its installed to the router, its 3rd party firmware and the guide will be on the VPN's site.

Good question. I wasn't going to go into that without knowing what the "activation" was about.

It tracks back to whether it is an "in" or "out VPN". If it is to let allow access into the network from afar, then it may be OpenVPN. That is there "for VPN connections to your router".

That is covered in the manual. although this may have changed in the decade since they wrote the instructions.

A VPN that lets the user hide their activity out of their network.

Again, the exact "phraseology" is important.

Either variety may need "activation" . And that depends on what we are talking about.

I find it difficult to imagine you found a new in the box R7000.  If it was previously used, the first step is to perform a firmware default (reset) then go through the initial configuration.

Did you purchase the replacement router direct from a VPN service provider?

I've seen older things on here users have found "new". Tends to just be sitting on a shelf in some old home office store and never clearance out.
