NOIP/DDNS update fails regularly

I've recently setup my R7000 to update to my ddns at noip.  While the update eventually succeeds, it ALWAYS fails a number of times before it succeeds.  Usually 3-5 failures before success.  Yesterday it failed at least 20 times and gave up for an hour before attempting again, eventually succeeding after several more attempts.  Below is an example from the R7000 logs today:

[Dynamic DNS] host name xxxxxx.ddns.net registration successful, Tuesday, Apr 16,2019 14:28:38
[Dynamic DNS] host name xxxxxx.ddns.net registration failure, Tuesday, Apr 16,2019 14:28:08
[Dynamic DNS] host name xxxxxx.ddns.net registration failure, Tuesday, Apr 16,2019 14:27:38
[Dynamic DNS] host name xxxxxx.ddns.net registration failure, Tuesday, Apr 16,2019 14:27:07
[Dynamic DNS] host name xxxxxx.ddns.net registration failure, Tuesday, Apr 16,2019 14:26:36
[Dynamic DNS] host name xxxxxx.ddns.net registration failure, Tuesday, Apr 16,2019 14:26:05

Is this a problem with Netgear or NOIP?  Is there anything I can do so it succeeds on the first try?

  • I'm in the same boat as Kitsap .  Have been using NoIP with R7000, Orbi and R8000p for years.  Registration authenticates once every 24 hrs.  Never fails.

Who is your ISP.  What device is in front of your Nighthawlk?

More inclined to believe its your connection to the web.  But If its not your connection, you can also try changing your PW.  Try something simple, and see if that resolves the intermittent failures.

  • I have a three year old R7000 and have been using NOIP/DDNS for a couple of years without issue.  My ISP is Comcast and the modem is an XB6-A configured in bridge mode.  The firmware version on my R7000 is R7000-V1.0.9.32_10.2.34.

My R7000 log entries look like this:

[Dynamic DNS] host name XXXXXXX.sytes.net registration successful, Tuesday, Apr 16,2019 21:05:25

The registration occurs approximately every 24 hours.

I have eight different client devices in three different cities that connect back to my LAN using Open VPN.  Experimentation with firmware updates is not on my list of things to do.

        Firmware - V1.0.9.64_10.2.64

        ISP - Comcast (1000Mbps Down / 35Mbps Up)

        Modem - Arris SB8200

        Modem Firmware - SB8200.0200.174F.311915.NSH.RT.NA

I just logged into my NOIP account directly and it says it hasn't been updated since I created the ddns hostname.  I should also point out that I have enabled IPV6 since the modem, router, and Comcast are fully IPV6 enabled.  My score at https://test-ipv6.com/ is 10/10 for IPV6 readiness.

The type of DNS record at NOIP is just a type A.  Is it possible that the R7000 is trying to push my IPV6 address to a type A instead of pushing my IPV4 address?  Should I create a AAAA record and see what happens?
