R7000 as AP, setup question

I'm zeroing in on the R7000 for my home network. Lots to learn since I haven't had a need for my own router for a few years and lots has changed. Anyway, I'm getting new Xfinity service with their provided modem/router in a bad location and want to use the R7000 temporarily as a cable-connected AP to extend my Wifi coverage. In a couple of months I'll get my own cable/voice modem and the R7000 will then be my main router.

Looking at the knowledge base, I see this article that shows a very easy procedure for doig the initial setup as an AP:

However, the list of routers this is said to apply to does not include the R7000. Then there is this other article that does include the R7000:

But this says it applies only after one has already run setup on the router.

So my question is what procedure I should use when I take the R7000 out of the box in order to configure it as an AP? Can I run the setup on it without it actually being connected to my cable modem (as opposed to a LAN port on the modem/router)?

I'd like to get an idea of how difficult this is going to be before making the purchase. (I'm technically proficient and am not afraid to go into a manual setup if that's what it takes.)
