R7000 Nighthawk - Expanding to a remote workshop
I've had a AC1900 R7000 Nighthawk operating in my house for many years and it has provided good service to connect devices like my MacBook Pro Laptops and iPad.
I recently built a stand alone Metal Pole Barn style workshop about 200' away and when the doors are closed can't pick up the house WIFI signal.
During construction we buried a Cat 5 cable between the buildings with the idea of putting a 'Remote" device in that shop, wired to the Nighthawk in the house, to allow a better connection of my user devices.
I'm ready to make the cable connections, but need to know what kind of device would be good to put on the end of the Cat 5 cable, to allow a wireless connection, when I have my laptop out in the workshop.
What are some small, compatible boxes that would do the job interfacing with my Nighthawk R7000?

Any brand of WiFi access point will connect to the R7000 over 200' of Ethernet cable and provide service to both WiFi and Ethernet devices inside the workshop.
Cat5 cable may support only a 100Mbps connection over 200' of Cat5 cable. (You will know when devices are connected.) Cat5e or Cat6 cable supports higher speed (gigabit). Although Ethernet cable is relatively inexpensive, replacing the existing cable might be impractical.
Amazon lists a number of WiFi access points for under $60.

Any router you have spare can be made into an access point. If you have one laying around you have to log into the router and make the wifi name whatever you want with the password. The important thing you need to do is DISABLE THE DHCP ON THE LAN ports which are the 4 ports on the back of the router. Then all you have to do is connect that CAT5 cable to one of those 4 ports on the back once you disable the DHCP and you'll have an access point.
