R7800 USB Compatible with HGST Ultrastar 7K4000?

I just bought an HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 hard drive and am trying to connect it via USB to use ReadyShare on the Netgear R7800 router. So far I am unable to make this work. Initially I was having an issue with a Mac also not being able to recognize the hard drive, but changing file format from NTFS to ExFAT fixed that issue. However, the router still does not recognize the drive. Not sure what I'm doing wrong?

Any help is appreciated.

The router supports the following file system types for full
          read/write access:

Do you see ExFAT in that list?

It is worth noting that the drive also did not work with NTFS. Clearly ExFAT also will not work.

However, adding a snarky response to a "help" forum is a bit contradictory, wouldn't you say?

      • Other people report that their Mac can see NTFS. Funny that you needed to use ExFAT to get the Mac to see it. I didn't realise that they still held out against the industry standard.

More to the point, the HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 is a standard hard drive. What you are using to make it accessible to the R7800?

You'll need one of those SATA to USB adapters, or a .

ReadyShare is a pretty basic technology for getting storage to show. It won't work with anything that needs drivers. It is also limited in how much power it can deliver.

You can get some idea of the sort of thing that ReadyShare supports here:

I don lt recall anyone talkimng about that sort of device.

PS Apologies for the rudeness that you perceive. Some people are just like that.

  • Thanks all. I found a different solution not too long after posting this. It isn't ideal, but it does work. I'm sharing the HGST HDD via my Windows machine and had to do some gymnastics with Time Machine to make the Mac be able to use it as a backup. I want both of my machines backing up to this HDD, so that's why I originally wanted it connected to the router.

Now that I think of it, I wonder if formatting the drive into a few partitions would have helped the router see it if there is a limitation on the size of the drive it can be connected to.

Anyway, at least for the time being I got the drive to work for what I needed via a different method. Thanks for the input and I do agree that the Netgear USB either doesn't support this or doesn't deliver all that I had hoped.

There are limits to the drives that Readyshare will see: 6TB may be getting there. But don't hold you breath in the hope that partitioning it would help. Past conversations here suggests that this doesn't help.
