R8000 Plex issues no external access

I’ve just bought the r8000 which I have plugged into a Virgin Homehub set to Modem mode. I have a Synology ds112j Nas attached via Ethernet and an Nvidia Shield running plex media server.

I cannot seem to get external access to my plex server. I have tried forwarding the port manually to no avail.

Could anyone kindly supply a checklist of things I can try to work through to solve my issue?

    What I'd try? 

    Putting the home hub back in router mode, disable its wifi, and the netgear in access point mode. 

    the home hubs aren't known to have the best function modem only/passthrough mode.

        It can be frustrating when using ISP supplied devices. There's not much drive for the ISP to have them run with another router.
