R8000P Access Control and DHCP issues

Hi Community,

I purchased an R8000P for the ability to connect a large number of WiFi devices at once, upgrading from a D7800.

I've got to say I'm less than impressed with the upgrade to date with the reduced WiFi range, plus issues I'm seeing with correctly managing static addresses and Access Control.

I'm on FW V1.4.2.84_1.3.42 and I've seen previous posts about AC not working as expected, but nothing more recent than 2020. I haven't measured speed across the network with AC enabled, it's not a critical factor, but accessing my network is. I've had examples where devices can't access the internet even though their MAC addresses are whitelisted, while I've also had WiFi devices connect to the network when they are either not whitelisted or blacklisted.

I've also had issues with static assigning IPs via MAC addressing. The thing assigns an IP wherever it feels like for some devices, while others it happily assigns the IP in the table. I'm also using an EX7700 to make up for the coverage loss during the upgrade, which I'm aware assigns a virtual MAC for connected devices. The D7800 allowed me to assign the true and virtual MAC to a single IP address, which worked a treat. Didn't matter if I roamed between APs the device was identified as the same thing. On this router though, I can't get it to lock a device to an IP address even if it is connected directly to the router with the true MAC address listed.

I can't remember having as many basic issues with a router ever before. I'm at the point where I'm considering running a considerable Ethernet network through the house to reduce the number of WiFi devices and go back to the D7800.

Any other suggestions prior to crawling through the roof space?

I recommend downgrading FW to v.62. Seems to be the best version currently.

You have replaced a modem/router with a router.

What did you get to replace the modem bit of the D7800?

The modem part of the system is provided by NBN, a torturous Hybrid Fibre Coax thing. No issues with that other than having to replace the last leg after having some air cond ducting contractor work done. The R8000P is fine configuring the Internet/WAN component. It's the LAN component that I'm having trouble with. Some devices never lose their IP, regardless of power state of either end of the connection, while others can't seem to either obtain an IP, or obtain the dedicated IP according to their MAC.
