Unable to get full download speed on R7800
I recently upgraded my internet package through Spectrum and got a new modem. I was getting around 120mbps and upgraded to 500mbps.
With the modem connected directly to my PC with network cable, speed test shows over 500mbps download speed like I'm supposed to get.
When I connect my modem to my R780 Nighthawk AC2600, then connect my PC via the same network cable, I can only get around 100-120mbps downoad.
I've upgraded the firmware to the latest version... have reset... have checked the settings for anything anomolous... everything seems fine.
I've tested via other devices using the wi-fi on both 2.4 and 5GHz - both only get the same 100-120mbps.
This router should be capable of up to 1700mbps... at least according to the documentation on it.
Any suggestions for how to get my router to perform like it should would be greatly appreciated.
It was the QoS settings... and the built in speed test used to determine the download and upload bandwidth, "Let Speedtest determine my internet speed (recommended)"
That test kept giving back a 120Mbps Down, 6 Up result and forcing the router to 'cap' at those speeds. So, I changed to the "I want to define my internet bandwidth" option and entered 500Mbps and 30Mbps (what my plan is supposed to max at) and NOW I actually get closer to those speeds over the R7800.
Never did make it as far as resetting to factory default... once I noticed those odd QoS settings, I knew I'd found the problem.
As for why the "built in" speed test gets those awful numbers... someone at Netgear ought to look into that and maybe consider changing providers.

The 1700mbps is wireless link speed. not throughput speed. And its over 4x4 wireless. most devices are only 1x1 antenna or 2x2.
What version of firmware are you on?
What modem is it connected to?
After this reset, did you do a clean install or did you use a backup configuration?

First, to be absolutely clear, my problem with download speed is on BOTH directly connected with a network cable AND wi-fi.
My firmware version is V1.0.2.78
The modem is a Spectrum provided modem. It's DOCSIS 3.1 eMTA.
When I connect the PC directly to the modem, with the same network cable, my download speed is over 500mbps. It's only slow once the router is between them.
I do not know what you mean by, "did you do a clean install or install from a backup?" All I did was get a new modem and reset the router.

a couple different things to try.
1. replace the cable between modem and router. And router/computer. it should work since the desktop does but I've seen stranger things than a sketchy cable working in 10/100mbps for one device and 10/100/1000mbps for another.
2. try reinstalling the firmware to it. maybe something was corrupt. After reinstalling, factory reset 1 more time and try it.
3. try downgrading the firmware a version. mabye yours has an issue with that router.
