MAC Address Issue

I set up my new Netgear router today. I had significant trouble establishing an Internet connection. I was previously using a Spectrum router. I was trying to install the new Netgear router to use with my current Spectrum modem. The issue is that I cannot connect to the Internet on my new Netgear device unless I use the MAC address from my previous Spectrum router. The Internet works fine now, but I am concerned that there are now two devices on the Internet with the same MAC address.  I have tried Spectrum and Netgear support and neither seem to know for sure if this will cause trouble.  Can someone help?  Thank you!

  • Thank you!  I ended up doing a factory reset of the ISP modem and that worked.

  • What NG router model do you have?

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem and router been performed?
Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:
    Turn off and unplug modem.
    Turn off router and computers.
Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
Turn on computers and rest of network.

Something the ISP should be able to help with regarding there hardware and MAC addresses. IF the NG router is new then only detect what the ISP modem is giving them and modem passes thru the DHCP or Spoof MAC address information to the router if needed.
Ask them about facotory resetting the ISP modem.
