RS500 - External Hard Drive - Access Extremely Slow

I have an RS500 and an external hard drive attached to the USB port. The drive serves as a backup for family videos, photos, and financial records. I use my iPad, iPhone, and the latest generation MacBook Air to access the drive. The iPhone and iPad use a software called Filebrowser Pro and are only able to view files. I have an AppleTV that also uses the Filebrowser Pro app.I use the MacBook to update, upload, and move files.

The problem is that the iPad and iPhone are able to access the drive very quickly. As soon as I launch the app I am able to view the drive, folders, and then use the files.

But with the MacBook Air and the AppleTv it takes minutes to access the drive tand then more minutes for the files to show up in the folder. Once the folder loads I can access, move, and delete files but it takes several minutes to get to that point and playing the videos or looking at the photos are also very very slow.

I can't understand why the mobile devices are able to access it so quickly while the Air and the AppleTV  are massively slow. I need to know how/what to change to make the drive more easily accessible to the two slow devices, if possible.

Can anyone help?

  • Does this happen with only one of the devices connected at the router and the USB drive?

Does this happen if you ethernet connect the mac book or Apple TV to the router?

Is IPv6 enabled on the router?

Is Protection Engine enabled on the router?

it only happens with the MacBook Air using Finder. What is weird is that if I do go to the folders and let them load, Finder remembers the folder and the files automatically load. But if I reboot the Mac, it "forgets" the drive and the folders and I have to go through the minutes long connection to the drive and then take several minutes per folder to let them load.

I can't be sure. I have an ethernet cable, but I don't have an adapter to connect the Air to the ethernet cable. I could order one from Amazon.

I am not sure. Where do I find that in the settings?

I am not sure of that either. Where do I find it?
