RS500 - Hates custom ipv6 LAN interface ID

I am able to setup a custom LAN ipv6 interface ID of the router from the ipv6 setup, but the connected client devices lose the ipv6 addresses when doing so. Everything works perfectly when the ipv6 LAN interface ID of the router is auto generated.

The custom setting works for a while after reboot and then devices randomly don't get ipv6 addresses from the router. The ipv6 address assignment is in the default auto config mode.

ISP provides DHCP with PD ipv6 internet with a public wan ip to the router and a /64 prefix delegated to the lan side of the router

Never had this issue with my previous R6700AX router. Any insights on why this might be happening?

  • ISP doesn't assign the interface ID on the LAN side, it only provides the /64 prefix for the router LAN. For now the issue seems to be resolved with a reboot. I am setting up my own interface ID rather than using the router generated interface ID from it's mac address for simplicity and reaching the router ipv6 address locally.

Does it work if you assign the same interface ID that you are getting from your ISP?  Though this can be tricky, since you might get a new IID when the lease expires.

  • I can ping the router locally from a PC by typing fe80::<my own IID> which would be simpler than entering the 16 digit router generated IID.

Which, as you likely know, is a link-local address.

Yes it is a link local ipv6 address to the router ipv6 LAN address.

How is the configuration set on the RS router? What IPv6 mode are you using?

    Try the beta FW yet?

I'm using DHCP ipv6 connection type which the ISP provides. Didn't try the beta FW yet.

  • IPv6 is working fine as of now after a  reboot with a custom LAN ipv6 interface ID.
