RS700 DNS issues
Hi,
I’ve noticed what appears to be DNS leakage in the latest two versions (1.0.11.8 & 1.0.11.6)
I use custom DNS for adblocking and with both versions I’ve seen what would normally be blocked being unblocked. Suspect that after a while the RS700 is using the ISP WAN supplied DNS as well as the custom DNS as the blocking / unblock is random.
When I first noticed it a few weeks back I downgraded back to 1.0.10.8 and had zero issues, everything that would normally be blocked stayed blocked.
Upgraded to 1.0.11.8 when it was released and once again started seeing the issues.
Happens on IPv4 & IPv6 - have tried with IPv6 disabled, same results.
Have today downgraded back to 1.0.10.8.
Thanks,
Tim

Did you confirm this? One way is to use the DNS test at BrowserLeaks.com.
coolwifi is seeing that CloudFlare is being added as a DNS server with the RS500, FURRYe38 is seeing that the "automatic" setting is using Google+CloudFlare, and ignoring the ISP DNS server.
So something odd here, that might also apply to the RS700.
I’ve got the old working version on at the moment but my ISP (Zzoomm) use Cloudflare and Google as DNS, I use NextDNS.
One.one.one.one appears in my logs with versions 1.0.11.8 & 1.0.11.6 installed but doesn’t with the older.
I was also seeing that on an Adblock test that on the old version I get 98% blocked but on the newer versions it was impossible to get everything blocked that would normally be blocked.
I’m pretty confident the 1.0.11.6 version has introduced the bug.
I just tested with old version via browser leaks and only NextDNS showed up, upgraded to 1.0.11.8 and NextDNS showed up along with Cloudflare.
Thanks,
Tim

Yeah, that's pretty clear.
Which seems like it must be intentional behavior. It'd be good to know the rationale.

It's evident that Netgear is adding the primary cloudflare ipv4 DNS server 1.1.1.1 to the user configured or ISP DNS servers with the latest firmware updates for the RS500/600/700 routers as seen from the various user posts here.

I've asked NG to see what is expected behavior for the Automatic DNS setting on RS Routers. Seems that auto is default and is using Cloudfare that NG has set for this option currently.
I'm using custom DNS on my RS600 and RS700 currently.- coolwifiVirtuoso
My ISP and cloudflare DNS servers get used by the browser in my client devices, your client will query the fastest responding DNS servers among the servers sent out by the router.

My ISP DNS servers are fast as cloudflare or quad9 or Google DNS in my location.
