Hi Liea
just to clear up. thanks for your help in fixing this problem. you connected to my PC and could see my system and corrected a couple of things which were incorrect. quite how the power break of a few seconds changed things that were working perfectly OK before is a mystery to me - but all is OK now
thanks

1. if the configuration files can be corrupted by a power failure, is there a way of saving copies of the config files so they can be restored if something like this fhappens again?
If you mean configurations of ReadyCloud, I don't think it would be corrupted by a power failure. And it's not just easily to restore by coping the configuration files back to your NAS.
2. I have set up over 30 backup operations which will have to be reinstated when the ssytem is rebuilt. is there anyway of saving the backup scripts or whatever controls them so they can be reinstated without having to reinput all the backup operations.
If you mean the backup jobs you created on admin UI Backup page, you can save the backup jobs on "System" -> "Settings" -> "Configuration Backup", select download "Everything", click "Download Configuration Archive". Then restore it to a fresh box with same volume name. You can check the volume name on page of "System" -> "Volumes".
I advise you not to reset the box now. Could you please turn on "Secure Diagnostic Mode" on page of "System" -> "Settings" -> "Support" and PM me your port number?
