Windows OS market share remains much larger than OSX - end-user PC share is about 5% for various versions of OSX, about 92% for various versions of Windows, and 3% "other". http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating ... pcustomd=0
Though I agree that it would be best if applications were available for all major platforms out of the chute, I do see the business priorities also. Windows Phone support for most companies will lag well behind IOS and Android (if its done at all), and Mac support will often lag behind Windows.

Hopefully Apple will get its act together, and allow other companies and open source services into its ecosystem. For instance, releasing itunes and icloud support for linux.[/Apple Bashing]

Apple products are a classic "walled garden". Your Mossberg link essentially says as much:

People who buy Android tablets don't feel that their "logical choice" for a PC is limited to Chomebook. People who buy Windows phones don't feel that their only PC option is Windows either.
...I think that people who buy iPads use them and they reduce their use of the laptop, but they realize that at some point, you just have to go to the laptop and because they’re already in an Apple situation, the Mac is the logical one to go to
