Built in AntiVirus is a MESS

Since the built in backup facility in the readynas does not support volume snapshots, I have been trying to use windows backup on my client machines to accomplish backups. I have been trying 2 different machines for about a week with no success. The backups fail with windows error 0x81000039 "The backup was not successful. The error is: Backup encountered an error when accessing the remote shared folder" I tried many different possible solutions, the last of which was to turn OFF the Antivirus function of the server.

This is the standard antivirus. I havent even tried the Antivirus Plus download. After turning this feature off, backup works fine. This is the second time Antivirus has been implicated in system problems. The first time was during the diagnosis of a crashing problem when the Level 3 tech Jerry Fulgencio (#9028) told me that I could not run antivirus and snapshots at the same time. I would like to use the advertised Antivirus feature, but at this point, it seems that it has a hard time working properly in this environment! The client PCs are running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. The backups include file backup and volume snapshots.

What can I do to get Antivirus to work? There isn't even a forum topic for this built in and downloadable (Antivirus + by Netgear) application. This in my opinion a marketed feature that is problematic at BEST!

Actually, I'm starting to wonder if anyone in this forum is running V6 software. Is there such bad blood because of a lack of upgrade path. From what I've seen, the folks on the older software may be at an advantage.

I'm sure many are. Though of course the installed base is still mostly older machines.

I use 4.1.x firmware on my old sparc NAS, 4.2.x on my pro-6, and 6.1.3 on the RN102.

The RN102 is used mostly for backing up pro-6 shares, though I also have plex installed there. Since it is a backup, I have AntiVirus turned off. Snapshots are enabled.
  • I have an RN104 purchased at the beginning of november so it's relatively new (firmware 6.1.4), and it's my first foray into NAS so didn't appreciate these things had processors and what they were entirely capable of (if they have the power). Initially I copied every thing over from the various external HD's I had connected to my HTPC before playing around with it and setting up antivirus, then last week I realised I had a lot of mp3's (a hundred or so) still on my laptop, stuff I'd downloaded more recently, and figured I should move them onto the NAS, however after a while it would fail and I discovered the NAS had locked up, so rebooted, tried again and again it failed, third attempt made go hunting for a reason on the net where I read about problems with the antivirus, so disabled it and finished off the move without any problems. I re-enabled the antivirus and thought well maybe it was to do with the number of files I was copying at the time.

Then earlier this week I was moving a Bluray rip onto it thinking it would be fine, not so many, a rather large mkv and supporting nfo/backdrop images, however it did the same again, several attempts failing before disabling antivirus and have left it disabled.

Now there is the possibility that some of these are large, even the mp3's (being dj mixes over an hour long), but even so I wouldn't consider them that large in this day an age, so clearly the antivirus isn't fit for purpose in what we'd expect to be normal use.
  • The ARM systems (RN1xx) especially will suffer with AV on. The slow CPU and lack of memory (256MB) will never be able to scan files in time while uploading large files. MESS=yes.

just a correction :) RN10xx is integrated with 512MB RAM on the motherboard and it is not upgradable, its performance is much better than old Sparc based NAS(256MB RAM).
  • There still is the option of using another antivirus like clamav but that will be via SSH with no frontend and I believe the footprint will be greater.
The antivirus provided by Netgear is not a homegrown product, it's from commtouch/cyren.

Actually I'm running both snapshots and antivirus (even compression, yep I'm seeking trouble ;) ) with 6.1.6RC10 and this works fine. I don't use the provided backup feature though.
