Is a manual install of MySQL even possible?

So I attempted to peform a manul install of the latest MySQL using their APT Repository method which seems to take all the guest work out of installing the package.  I created a folder called download under admin home directory and ran MD5sum to ensure the APT repository package was legit.  The MD5 was confirmed to match to what's listed on their page: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/repo/apt/

admin@RN626:~/downloads$ md5sum mysql-apt-config_0.8.0-1_all.deb
77903c9741895fb68408b4527367bca7 mysql-apt-config_0.8.0-1_all.deb

I then went to install it and was denied due to not having superuser privilege.  Really?  So I tried using the SUDO command even though I already have SSH/Root priviledges and still no dice. I have not yet tried just installing the standalone package but believe it too would fail due to priviledges.

So my questions are:

  • How do I get superuser privileges?
  • I presume my permissions are limited by Netgear to reduce the chance of users messing up their NAS.  However, there has to be a way to backup core libraries/OS system and restore them should anything go wrong.
  • Does anyone at Netgear or otherwise have the ability to test manually installing MySQL or PHP and posting the results/procedure?  Granted everyone would use it at their own risk but it still would be super useful given the situation with the App store.

admin@RN626:~/downloads$ dpkg -i mysql-apt-config_0.8.0-1_all.deb
dpkg: error: requested operation requires superuser privilege

admin@RN626:~/downloads$ sudo dpkg -i mysql-apt-config_0.8.0-1_all.deb
-bash: sudo: command not found

Sounds great, but I did have one thought.  Is the installation of Apps limited to using the Admin page only?  In short, I would have to upload it via that page to run the app?  The problem of course is not all apps are going to be design to run from that page and this may be one of those cases.

Beisser answered your original issue on another thread - you are logging in as "admin" instead of "root".

"apps" are installed/removed from the apps page by definition.  An app which installed mySQL would be uploaded/installed from the apps page, and would be removable.

You can of course install stuff directly from ssh if you wish.  You want to be very careful not to use up too much space in the OS partition.
