I would like to introduce "RaidarGadget 0.1", a windows sidebar gadget capable of displaying Raidar info. This is the initial beta 0.1 release so please let me know if you have any feedback about this gadget's installation process, stability, appearance and features. The gadget is written for WPF (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Presentation_Foundation) and requires the .NET 4.0 framework to be installed in order to run. Although Microsoft announced last week that it will abandon gadgets in Windows 8 in favour of it's new Metro applications I thought it would be nice to make this gadget available anyway since Windows 7 will be around for some time. I also hope that the WPF core of the gadget will be easily transferable to Metro.
Description:
RaidarGadget 0.1 is a Windows 7 sidebar gadget that can be used to monitor NAS statistics like temperature, fan rpm, disk status etc. just like the Yahoo! Raidar widget and Netgear Raidar utility display. Due to the limited screen real estate of a gadget the most important information is displayed in the gadget, all other information can be found in tooltips when hovering over the items in the gadget. This gadget will also inform of any errors, like disk failure, by changeing the color of that part of the gadget.
Author: TheGarf
Prerequisites:
- Microsoft .NET framework 4.0 should be installed
- Windows 7 (not tested on Vista) with sidebar enabled.
Known limitations:
- Supports only 1 ReadyNAS in the local network (it will monitor the first NAS that responds on the network).
- The RaidarGadget will start somewhat slower than the other gadgets since it has to wait for the WPF web host to start.
- The gadget doesn't work correctly with windows display scaling for monitors with high DPI.
- No gadget configuration panel and gadget flyout possible due to an interoperability issue in the sidebar application.
Tested on:
- ReadyNAS NV
- Windows 7.0 x64 with Internet Explorer 8.0
- Windows 7.0 x64 with Internet Explorer 9.0
Example:

RaidarGadget v0.1

RaidarGadget v0.1 showing extra info in a tooltip
Installation:
1. Use the link below after you make sure you've met the prerequisites above and accept to install the gadget.
Edit: See link above for latest version
2. Windows firewall or your firewall application will tell you that the gadget application tries access the network. It has to have local network access in order to communicate with your ReadyNAS.

- TheGarfAspirantThanks to Szerda I was able to squash a bug in the gadget. As it turns out some NAS-ses don't (always) send general temperature info while my gadget was expecting it to be present always. I've updated the gadget to version 0.3 and you can download it at the usual location:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13081582/RaidarGadget.gadget
Change History:
- Added the ability to handle the case no general temperature info is sent by the NAS
- Removed empty tooltip on NAS name label when status is ok. - szerdaAspirantThank you Graf v0.3 is working.
one more problem: my disks info are too long and not show everything in tooltips:
i show: "SAMSUNG HD103SJ 931 G" but my second disk's full string is: SAMSUNG HD103SJ 931 GB, 38C/100F;31 ATA Errors
Can you split tooltip info?
other: are ther any alarm windows/message or any other if ther are any problem with nas?
example: fan speed 0 rpm or hdd error status not ok
thanks
Szerda - gibxxiGuideWorking fine here.
Mousing over the UPS: entry shows the current operating mode in the tooltip. However the Name of the UPS is missing from both the gadget and the tooltip displayed.
Is it possible to get load information from the NAS? I think this would be a useful addition, as well as maybe upload / download speeds and maybe status of each ethernet controller. lol, just ideas for further expansion of the gadget.
From a personal point of view, the gadget could be a little narrower and slightly longer. All my gadgets are ones from addgadget.com and this looks slightly out of place against those. But not a big deal. Thanks for your effort, it's greatly appreciated. Saves having to open Raidar to check NAS status.
:) - Looks like there are a couple of issues when multiple ReadyNAS units are found...
#1 No way to select which NAS is being displayed.
#2 After about 20-30 seconds (probably the interval/check time) the gadget switches to connection lost.
Since you asked for a log, here you go. ;)
As for a wish list:
- Options menu to select the NAS/IP to be used/forced - if an automatic detection fails or won't show the unit desired.
- Design requests, little bit taller wouldn't hurt and resizing would be awesome too (could be done via the options menu).
- General UPS status info could be shown in green/orange/red instead requiring to hover over it.
- Additional UPS info regarding remaining battery life (percentage and time) would be nice too.
- Very minor and mostly me being pedantic, MAC addresses are usually displayed capitalized to reduce (human) reading errors. :)
Keep up the good work! This is definitely on the right tracks... 8) - TheGarfAspirant

Sorry for the late response, I've been working on other projects lately.
With regards to splitting the tooltip; this is easily possible. I'll be publishing the gadget code on Github under GPL-license so others can contribute or make their own adaptations.
The second question was about whether or not the gadget will display alerts: Yes it does!
Here's an example with all alert types enabled:
The specific alert message can be read in the tooltip of the element that is in alert state. - TheGarfAspirant

Hmm, there might be an issue with UPS name display. Since I have no UPS myself I'm not able to test is as thoroughly as I would like.
Can you send me any log you find here as outlined in this post: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=57672#p340047?
I'll see if I can reproduce the issue.
I don't think the gadget currently has access to any network load information although somebody might be able to add it. The current information the gadget is able to display is the same as the Raidar tool.
With the gadget up on Github as open source somebody might make a smaller version. If anyone likes to contribute to developing the gadget further send me a PM. - TheGarfAspirantI've fixed the UPS name issue. No need to send me any log files.
The updated gadget can be downloaded here:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13081582/RaidarGadget.gadget - Thanks for the update, doesn't fix the connection lost issue (described here) though. :(
- Hi.
First, thanks for the new sidebar & the time you invested in.
I have some more suggestions:
1.Size in width is a little bit larger then other sidebars
2.Mostly, the NAS has more than one FAN (CPU, SYS), put both on sidebar with description
3.There is only one temperature (put both on - CPU & SYS)
My NAS is under the roof (attic), becouse of that, I need more information.
See, the picure:
TNX for understanding.
Regards. - TheGarfAspirant

Sebastian, I wasn't able to find any issue in the log file. What the gadget basically does is it sends a packet to the NAS after which the NAS responds with the status message. When this response doesn't come within 30 seconds, which is close to eternity on a local network :) , it will consider the connection lost. I could change the value to 1 minute but are you sure that a package isn't somehow lost on your network? Can you check if the RAIDar application of Netgear is able to maintain a connection with your NAS? I'm not sure if RAIDar constantly polls the NAS for status but if it also looses the connection I would suspect something on your network is wrong.
