I would like to introduce "RaidarGadget 0.1", a windows sidebar gadget capable of displaying Raidar info. This is the initial beta 0.1 release so please let me know if you have any feedback about this gadget's installation process, stability, appearance and features. The gadget is written for WPF (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Presentation_Foundation) and requires the .NET 4.0 framework to be installed in order to run. Although Microsoft announced last week that it will abandon gadgets in Windows 8 in favour of it's new Metro applications I thought it would be nice to make this gadget available anyway since Windows 7 will be around for some time. I also hope that the WPF core of the gadget will be easily transferable to Metro.
Description:
RaidarGadget 0.1 is a Windows 7 sidebar gadget that can be used to monitor NAS statistics like temperature, fan rpm, disk status etc. just like the Yahoo! Raidar widget and Netgear Raidar utility display. Due to the limited screen real estate of a gadget the most important information is displayed in the gadget, all other information can be found in tooltips when hovering over the items in the gadget. This gadget will also inform of any errors, like disk failure, by changeing the color of that part of the gadget.
Author: TheGarf
Prerequisites:
- Microsoft .NET framework 4.0 should be installed
- Windows 7 (not tested on Vista) with sidebar enabled.
Known limitations:
- Supports only 1 ReadyNAS in the local network (it will monitor the first NAS that responds on the network).
- The RaidarGadget will start somewhat slower than the other gadgets since it has to wait for the WPF web host to start.
- The gadget doesn't work correctly with windows display scaling for monitors with high DPI.
- No gadget configuration panel and gadget flyout possible due to an interoperability issue in the sidebar application.
Tested on:
- ReadyNAS NV
- Windows 7.0 x64 with Internet Explorer 8.0
- Windows 7.0 x64 with Internet Explorer 9.0
Example:

RaidarGadget v0.1

RaidarGadget v0.1 showing extra info in a tooltip
Installation:
1. Use the link below after you make sure you've met the prerequisites above and accept to install the gadget.
Edit: See link above for latest version
2. Windows firewall or your firewall application will tell you that the gadget application tries access the network. It has to have local network access in order to communicate with your ReadyNAS.

- nbl1268AspirantHi all, version 0.4 of this gadget is available here https://www.dropbox.com/s/qptedbnxa7udy6a/RaidarGadget.gadget
The changes included in this version are
- resized to 130w x 145h
- MAC address in Uppercase
- UPS background colour set to match UPS status
- UPS now shows % when okay and minutes left when no mains power
- Disk Description in tooltip reformatted
- Fan Speed label background colour set to match FAN status
- Details of multiple fans shown in Fan tooltip
- Details of multiple temperatures shown in Temperature tooltip
- UPS and FAN text font set to BOLD black
- UPS battery % and minutes left added to tooltip
I think this covers most of the requests raised on this forum; feedback and suggestions welcomed.
Very interested to hear from users that have different drives (other than WDC) in their NAS to see that the formatting for the disk description works.
Neil - HERBIEOAspirantWell done TheGarf very nice Tidy gadget keep up the good work and thanks.
- gibxxiGuidenbl1268 / TheGarf: Thanks for the PM, much apprieciated. And thanks for the update too, very TIDY if I may say so. Sorry I missed your reply to my original post.
In response to your HDD Tooltip request, I'm running 4x Samsung HD204UI drives in my ReadyNAS Ultra 4. The tooltip displays the names of these as (SAMSUNG HD204UI) and the free space, so no issues there. The Tooltip separates the brand, model, and free space onto separate lines in the tooltip, but this doesn't bother me in the slightest. UPS tooltip also properly displays the UPS type correctly.
Nice Work. :) - Nice, work - still drops the connection due to multiple NAS's being around here but from what I can see it looks pretty awsome with the latest changes. 8)
- jamestx10AspirantI run two network cards going to two networks and the gadget never finds my NAS. RAIDar finds the NAS without issue. Anything I can do to get the gadget working?
- nbl1268AspirantInteresting problem.. could be similar to having two NAS devices on the same network. I'll PM you for some more information.

First of all: Thanks a lot for this release Neil! It's running stable for about a month here (no crashes\glitches).
If others are interested in working on the development of the gadget or just want to have a look at the source code, it's available in github here:
https://github.com/TheGarf/RaidarGadget
Just leave me or Neil a personal message if you want to collaborate to the project on Github.HERBIEO wrote: Well done TheGarf very nice Tidy gadget keep up the good work and thanks.
All credits for this release go to Neil, I merely provided the code.Theresias wrote: Nice, work - still drops the connection due to multiple NAS's being around here but from what I can see it looks pretty awsome with the latest changes. 8) jamestx10 wrote: I run two network cards going to two networks and the gadget never finds my NAS. Hmm, I don't have 2 NASses and 2 networks so I am not able to code and test the gadget with those conditions. I'll have a look and see what I can find. I'll need somebody to test those changes though. Any volunteers? - PapaBear1ApprenticeI have two NAS units (both NVX) on the same network, but only one network. I would be glad to assist, but am a non-programmer. I do have a moderate understanding of networks.
Note: I have downloaded and installed the latest. I note there is no wrench icon to make adjustments. Perhaps something in the order of the way you change zip codes on weather gadgets. I have two of the Accuweather gadgets on my laptop with two different locations that way.
When I loaded the second NAS gadget, the first one went blank. I thought it was because of the second one loaded. However, after removing the first, and only having one, the second one is reporting connection lost and is blank. RAIDar itself does not report this. - jamestx10AspirantSo I no longer have two networks and I an still having an issue with the gadget. When first opened it will find the NAS and work as expected. After some time (I have not timed it but it is within a few hours at least) it loses connection and will not find the NAS again unless I close the gadget and open it again which repeats the process. Any ideas?
- nbl1268AspirantHi there,
Not sure why the gadget is losing the connection after a period of time now that you have only one network.
One option to help work this out is to use the test app, you can find the .exe file here https://www.dropbox.com/s/0i2uzjxwr2tz2yb/MyRAIDarTest.exe.
Just change the value in the setting box to say 30 or 60 (this is seconds; and just so the log file is not too big) and check the box for 'Auto Send Message A'.
This will create a log file on your desktop with the messages and when you see that the gadget has lost connection, this app should be showing the same message.
Also the log file will let you see (from time stamps) just when the connection was lost.
Feel free to send a copy of the log file through (via PM) if it has something interesting in it that could help fix the problem.
Regards
Neil
