As long as your source list is limited to the following:
deb http://www.readynas.com/packages 4.2.21/
deb http://www.readynas.com/packages 4.2.22/
deb http://archive.debian.org/debian etch main
Should be fine because the system will ask you whether or not to accept the recommended changes. Say <N> if you think the selected packages will cause conflicts. If so, go with 'update' instead of 'upgrade'. On my system, I think I had better success using 'upgrade' in that particular sequence. I agree, it's best not to make a habit of using 'upgrade'.
