Yes, of course I changed the MySQL root password, not using one would be quite insecure wouldn't it?
However, I changed it back to default (meaning none) and tried again (after fixing the PHP installation and its MySQL-extension) now it is working again.
It's a bit odd that this would not work if you have a password set to MySQL (but that might just be me and a bit more secure thoughts).
