VirtualBox on OS6

So I halfheartedly tried this a while back but did't really have the time, but I'm going to get it to work this time.

I'm surprised not no one has made a guide for this (on OS6)

Want to get some opinions if I'm going about this the right way.

1.) I will be using an RN314
2.) I will load 6.1.7
3.) Load 6.1.7 GPL code
4.) Install virtualbox (any prerequisites? changing of kernel etc?)
5.) Install phpvirtualbox (any prerequisites? mysql etc?)

I just want to know from an overview standpoint if this right, I'm sure I'll figure out the smaller hitches as I go along?

  • I seem to be having trouble compiling the kernel

Makefile:588: /data/.apps/linux-3.0.101-0.15/arch/KERN_DIR=/usr/src/linux-3.0.101-0.15/Makefile: No such file or directory
make: *** No rule to make target `/data/.apps/linux-3.0.101-0.15/arch/KERN_DIR=/usr/src/linux-3.0.101-0.15/Makefile'. Stop.
  • OK so I managed to recompile the kernel, not entirely sure what went wrong but I started from the beginning and came right.

Now I can seem to install any packages with apt-get, I'm assuming I need to add repositories but I'm not sure what I need to add other than what's in the sources.list by default?

Look to see if a line is commented out that shouldn't be.

    nope
deb http://apt.readynas.com/packages/readynasos 6.1.7 updates apps main

    deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian wheezy main

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free

I shouldn't say no packages install but if I try install x-window-system for example I cant install any of the dependencies even using -f
  • dpkg seemed to be locked even after a reboot so I ran rm /var/lib/apt/lists/lock and I seem to be back on track
  • I have vbox running on the NAS now with phpvirtualbox but I seem to get one of two issues, either I get invalid username or password or I get a "cannot connect to host" error
which I think is related to the same issue, something not configured correctly on vboxwebsrv but I can't figure out what.

I have posted an issue here https://code.google.com/p/phpvirtualbox/issues/detail?id=723
