104 support for 6TB hdds and Fan Replacement question
Hi there, I think about buying a ReadyNAS 104 but there are two things that I have to get clear first (burned child). 1.) I wait for a firmware that supports 6TB HDDs because I have a lot of big...

The RN104 uses a standard 92mm fan. Some 90mm fans may also work.
1. The maximum fan speed is over 3000RPM. If you use a quiet fan, the maximum fan speed may not cover all operational range.
2. The fan in the RN104 gives the standard two speed pulses per rotation. If your fan generates 4 pulses then the speed reading will be wrong though this should not affect how the NAS operates.
3. Most of our NAS units use 12V popular 3-pin fan (RPM, Voltage, Ground). Our 516 uses a 4-pin (12V, PWM, RPM, Ground) self-driven fan. You should be able to see what type of fan your NAS uses by looking up the fan model on the web.
We do cover the fan itself under the claimed warranty term for the NAS unit.
We only use high quality ball bearing fan. The RN104 fan is rated for 70K hours which is about 8 years, so it should last much longer than the warranty period in most cases. Of course like any hardware it can fail at any time.
In the RN104 case the fan is rated at 5W. Make sure you do not put anything higher than a 5W fan in a RN104. Also make sure that fan operational range is about 5V to 12V which is very typical.
Installing a 3rd party fan does void the warranty so I suggest you only consider replacing the fan with a 3rd party one if it fails after the warranty expires.
