Perhaps they use more power in France? :D
My numbers for the dm came from here: http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/internal-h ... M000#specs I used Seagate's "average operating power" for both. I'm not sure why its different from the "typical operating power" on the datasheet. If you use 7.5 for the DM, you end up tripling the power cost difference (~$20 per year in the US, €20 in France). It seems odd, but apparently the exchange rate is about the same as the electricity cost ratio.
I agree its hard to put a value on the "peace of mind" - which is why I singled out the warranty on the economic side.
