Access to the disk on channel (??) is producing I/O errors
Hello,
We have a ReadyNAS Duo (Sparc) running the latest firmware which is generually used as a backup of other servers, using rsync to sync files overnight. The NAS has been running happily for the last year or so without any major issues.
A couple of times in the past we've had this message in the log, but last night it appeared 4 times in a single night.
Naturally the (??) is not very useful, looking at the SMART data for the drives, they appear to be OK without any major error numbers.
Does anyone know why it would report (??) instead of an actual drive channel, is it the actual drives that have an issue or not?
The NAS has become unresponsive a couple of times in the last few weeks where it refuses new ssh connections, even when the NAS is still running - I know this as we get emails from CRON tasks running even when new connections are refused.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Access to the disk on channel (??) is producing I/O errors. Although the array is still redundant, please replace this drive as soon as possible, as it is likely to fail soon.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe ?? means that the system doesn't know what drive is causing the root problem.
pending sector count of 114 and offline uncorrectable of 38 (drive 1) is not ok. Pending sectors are sectors that couldn't be read. (similar to reallocated sectors - but since it was a read, there was no point in reallocating). If it were me, I'd replace that drive.
Also keep an eye on the hard disk resets (135 on each). Not sure what is causing them - it could be the other issues issues reported with drive 1, or it could be something else.
BTW, since you have SSH installed, you should periodically check OS partition fullness.
