Hi AllCan somebody please simplify for me how the backup process works.I have just purchased a backup drive that is connected to my NAS via USB. I want to now backup my Video share which is around 4TB. What schedule should i set for this backup to run and complete. I have no idea how long it would take to backup 4TB.I see there is an option for full back up and you can set this to 'first time'. Would this allow the backup to run and complete regardless of what schedule is set? I don't want the backup to run and then stop halfway through because my schedules are all wrong. Backup jobs will not stop until it finished or unless there had been an error or connectivity issue or you have manually stopped the backup job. HTH

The only way to achieve incremental backups with mirroring is to use rsync. If you use local-to-local backup, then you'll need to set the option to "remove the contents of the backup destination before full backup". Then every backup needs to be full (otherwise you won't get mirroring). The initial (full) backup will be faster with local-to-local, but later backups will take a lot longer (unless you change a lot of files in the source). If you don't care about mirroring, then local-to-local would be faster. The advantage of not mirroring is that it gives you more time to retrieve a file that you accidentally deleted from the NAS. But if you need to fully restore the NAS, you'll need to wade through the backup and manually prune out the files that you no longer want. BTW, there is a middle ground. You can set the the options for local-to-local above, but tell the system to do a full backup every 4 weeks. That would prune out very old files, which would limit the analysis you'd need to do if you needed to fully restore the NAS. But of course every 4 weeks the backup would take a lot longer. No matter what you choose, it would be better to rotate two USB drives. Backup drives do sometimes fail, and sometimes you won't discover that until you try to read from them. Plus if the NAS fails during a full backup you can lose a lot of data. FWIW, I am using an old NV+ as a secondary backup using rsync. It holds ~4.3 TiB of data, and the backup speed isn't much different from your USB performance (it likely is slower). Weekly incremental rsync backups typically take about 30-40 minutes. Hi Marc_V Thats great thanks for confirming this. I Have another question regarding what protocol to use when backing up data. So my setup is basic. I have my NAS RN104 primary media server and a Desktop Backup HDD which is connected to the RN104 via the USB3 port. I have tested a backup job using local to local (NAS to USB3 Port) and this worked fine.Only thing i noticed is if i modify or delete a file on the primary server then run the backup the files on the USB drive do not change. After doing some research it seems i would need to setup Rsync for this function to work. So i have now setup an Rsync backup Job (Local NAS to Remote Rsync Server) and tested and it works how i want it to. My question is what is the best (recommended) way to backup from NAS to Local USB drive. What will offer the fastest speeds? Should i only use Rsync if tranfering over a WAN? TIA

If you want to use the rsync option to delete files on the target that are deleted on the source, then set up the backup source or destination as a "remote" NAS at 127.0.0.1, which is known as the localhost address and points back to itself.

Hi Sandshark Thanks for the info. I have it working (i believe) without setting the localhost IP 127.0.0.1.I am using the Readynas web portal and i just enabled Rsync on the Shares i want to backup. When configuring the backup job, for the remote host IP i used the Private IP that is configured on the NAS. Then i enabled 'remove deleted files on taget' in the advanced section. I run a few manual tests by deleting and modifying files on the local server, these files then adjusted on the remote as expected. I basicallly want to achieve a scenario where the Backup USB HDD is always mirrored to the primary NAS Drive. What ever files/folders change on the primary should change on the Backup. I think i have achieved this with my current Rsync setup. How is data transfered with Rsync when the backup is a USB connected directly to the NAS. I assume it will be using the USB3.0 speeds as the backup drive is not a network drive. TIA
