That is a good point. Best to put a spare disk (must not be from your array) in the replacement NAS and check that the firmware is at least as new as the firmware on the old unit. You can update the firmware on the replacement unit, verify the update is successful, then power down, remove the spare disk and then migrate your array across.
Attempting to migrate an array running 4.2.16 (or later) to a system with 4.2.15 or older firmware on the flash is not a good idea. So checking the firmware is up to date in the replacement unit is strongly recommended.
