Just in an edit, I'm not actualy sure whether the drives are being recognised, but the lights DO turn on faintly when I insert a drive.

Can you ping the NAS (using the IP address shown in RAIDar)?

    Yes I can ping, and it returns.

      Does RAIDar still detect the NAS with the drives removed, but not when the drives are installed?

       

      If so, I think the next step is to test the drives in a windows PC using Seatools (Seagate's diagnostic).
