Sounds to me like you could have a PSU issue (just a guess though) or perhaps an issue with the SATA backplane.
USB Boot Recovery requires using a special USB Boot Recovery image ( e.g. http://www.readynas.com/download/support/ReadyNAS_USB_Flash_Recovery-4.1.14.img )
and you'd connect the USB key to the front USB port.

Thanks for the response.
I will try zeroing out the disks now and let you know what the result is. I've tried individually and paired, Seagate 750GB, 1.5TB, and 2TB drives with no luck. I have been able to get all sets of HDD working in a ReadyNAS NV+ as part of my testing.
Also with regards to the USB Recovery Tools I find them a bit ambiguous. There's a couple questions.
1. When it says "If you are experiencing boot problems and TFTP Boot Recovery and write that image to the USB flash device. To write the image on a Windows PC, you'll need to use Rawrite32." What image is it referring too? I downloaded "RAIDiator-Sparc-4.1.16.zip". Does it want me to just choose that file and write it to the USB? I feel like those instructions are missing a step on the How/What to actually write on the USB with Rawrite32.
2. When it says "Power down the ReadyNAS, insert the USB flash device" Does it matter which USB port I plug the USB drive into? There's one on the front and two in the back.
Also note I was able to get into Tech Support Mode and telnet into the NAS. But at that point I'm not sure what I can look for to see why it decides to lose network connectivity as soon as I plug a HDD into it. Any ideas what I can check for in Tech Support Mode to see where my problem might be?

If you google, you can find some compatible power bricks for sale.

Thank you for the information on the USB recovery. I'll give that a try tomorrow.
As for the potential for a faulty power supply. I haven't really seen anything that would elude to it being power supply related unless you guys are familiar with the behavior outlined below being related to faulty power supply.
Basically the NAS powers on just fine and all lights appear to function and I can get it to respond to reset button and power button reset as I would expect(although i never seem to get any results out of trying either). However, when I do have drives in it I get the power light flashing at a steady pulse then cycling to a fast blink and then a quick blip on all lights on the front and then back to a steady pulse and then cycling back to a fast blinking along with the fan sounding like it changes speed just a bit.
Are these symptoms of faulty power supply?
If so, Stephen are you just referring to the external power adapter being replaced? Or is there something internal related to the power that requires replacement too?

Well this is just a guess as what could be a possibility. It could be the SATA backplane in the NAS or something else again that's got a problem.
It's very risky buying used units.
