(case: 17637565) ReadyNAS Ultra 2 corrupts my files

I've had my ReadyNAS Ultra 2 for almost 4 months. Now I've start noticing more and more of my video files have random glitches when playing them. I've tried to pinpoint the source of the file corruption and the NAS is now my #1 suspect.

How I came to this suspicion:
Transfered a testfile to the NAS from 2 different PCs, then checked how well the testfile transfered to the NAS matched the original testfile. By average these files only matched each other by 98%, and never better than 99%. The transfer was made several times thru a direct connection over CIFS with jumboframes both enabled and disabled.

I've allready run diskcheck on both the computers used for testing and the NAS itself, and found no errors. I've tried the memtest on the NAS but I'm not certain about the result. It goes from all leads lit -> all leads black for about 2 min -> all leads lit for 10 sec and repeat.

Since the disks appears to be healthy I would suspect that something about the transfer itself is to blame, but shouldnt that result in slower transferrate rather then corrupted file segments?

So I'm not sure what to do next, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Forgot to mention that the NAS runs RAIDiator 4.2.19 and both the computers in the test runs windows 7 64-bit.

I've got no addons installed on the NAS.
  • Another thought: might it be the file system conversion (NTFS -> Ext3/Ext4) that messes up the files?
  • Thank you for your quick reply! I've done like you asked and opened a support case. Btw, is there anyway to truly know if the NAS is corrupting my files? Like any support-tool of the sort?

For starters support could look at your logs zip file (Status > Logs > Download all logs) if you send it to them. Btw if it's an online case, I think there might be an option to attach a file. If not, wait and they'll give you instructions on how to send the logs.
  • As far as I know, yes, it should be the stock memory. But the whole unit was swapped on warrenty about 2 months ago and I've never checked what memory this unit came with. Come to think about it, the unit completly frooze on me, twice, when I tried to upgrade to the newest formware, I had to use factory reset thru boot menu to recover it, maybe this is a sign of faulty/non-compatible memory?

or some other fault with the RMA unit.

If testing your disks no problems are found I think I'd suggest requesting another RMA.
