I agree with you that ReadyCloud is not the way to go in a business environment. The fact that your ReadyCloud user and your local user are diofferent users is the number one reason, but there are others. A VPN is the way to go. There are many ways to implement that. You can do it in your router or in the NAS. I personally like ZeroTier, as it establishes a "parallel connection". The standard IP is still there, and then there is the private ZeroTier port. You have to install ZeroTier on each PC (or phone) that needs to access the NAS, but then you just use the ZeroTier address anywhere you would normally use the standard IP address. It even works NAS-to-NAS. More details here: ZeroTier-and-the-ReadyNAS.
You can find a ReadyNAS specific version here: NAStools/zerotierone. It's a bit old, but still works. It has an advantage of a GUI. Alternately, you can do a standard Linux install via SSH, which has only a command line interface.
