chirpa has a thread where he has tested encryption using EncFS. See http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=29874 which demonstrates that he has had a look into it.
Doing this is unsupported, but if you have the technical knowledge to do it, you can go ahead and set it up.
