Downgrading Readynas from OS 6.10 to 6.9.x
The title says it all. I upgraded and now I cannot compile virtualbox 5.1 using the linux linux-4.4.190-x86_64 kernel. I know the postings say do not, but is there anyway to go back in conjunct...

Thanks.
For anyone else contemplating the same thing:
I just tested this on a virtual NAS. It is not necessary to modify the time. Instead of modifying the length, delete one byte after the header to make up for the one added in the header. To verify everything is aligned, go to 0x4000 and verify that the ASCII data csums.md5 starts exactly at 0x4000.
I called the "update" 6.10.8. The file name doesn't matter, BTW, just how it identifies itself in the file header.
I did not see any immediate issues with access, but funglenn did see Samba issues, so consider that this downgrade may cause you to have to factory default to fix issues caused by downgrading Samba, and act accordingly.

Going off topic here and happy to create this as a new post if needed, as I said previously this was a cheap temporary solution that I have recently purchased just to get 2 drives online for me to backup my old photos from a very old WD mycloud device that I am afraid may fail soon due to its age. (Around 15 years old)
My next question is, is there a way to get this readynas online now so that I can remote into it from my phone and tablet when away from the house ? I believe that readycloud would have done this previously but it is now discontinued ?
Is there a simple way to set this up without having a pc permanently running ?

That lets me reach anything on my home network from my phone, tablet, or laptop. Many other higher-end routers have this (or something similar - Wireguard, etc).
It is also possible to deploy ZeroTier on the NAS, and use the ZeroTier app on your phone, tablet or PC
Both of these options are secure.

I tried to install the Zero tier app form the link in the post but get "error Cannot install application nastools-zerotier-one"
if i try to run the below script......
curl -s https://install.zerotier.com/ | bash
zerotier-cli join <yournetworkID>
zerotier-cli infothen i get the below...
*** Installing zerotier-one package...
E: Malformed entry 1 in list file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/zerotier.list (Component)

any ideas ? its all well above my head.

This isn't an app I use myself, so I am tagging Sandshark

No. You need to create a network at ZeroTier.com, and that is the ID that you need to use.
Using a router-hosted VPN server might be an easier path for you. What model router do you own?
- ItsmearronFeb 13, 2025AspirantI just use the standard virgin media super hub 5

- ItsmearronFeb 13, 2025AspirantYeah they have very basic settings.
What are some cheap alternatives that do have the options that are needed ? Only looks for a cheap solution currently as this is only a temporary measure I will look to buy a Synology Nas in about a years time. - StephenBFeb 13, 2025Guru - Experienced User

- watch videos on the NAS?
- photos?
- music?
- something else?
- ItsmearronFeb 13, 2025AspirantMostly photos mate, I have a lot of our family photos on the drive. Possibly so light retro rom games.
It would be good If I could backup photos from my phone to the Nas when out and about or be able to view the photos on the Nas via my phone when out too. - StephenBFeb 13, 2025Guru - Experienced User

If you can't install it on the NAS, then you could instead install it on a PC that you leave on when you are away (mapping the NAS share for backup to a PC drive letter). The setup is quite easy.
Resilio Sync can also be used for viewing photos on the NAS, but you need to copy the photos you want to view from the NAS to the phone. If you go that route, you will want the selective sync feature (so you can choose what photos to copy). But I think a better path would be to install plex on the NAS, and create the photo library on Plex. You can use the Plex app on the mobile devices, or you could try the Plex Photos app.
Depending on the GB you need, you could also just go with Google Drive or iCloud, and manually copy from the Cloud to the NAS when you get home. 200GB of storage costs £2.99 per month. 2 TB costs £9.99 per month. This would give better performance than a VPN, since Virgin Media offers limited upload speeds (20 mbps for M125, going up to 52 mbps for Gig1).

- ItsmearronFeb 13, 2025AspirantI am on the volt 1gb virgin media, I do have a Google one account with 200gb but wanted this as a backup to that service the Google account only saves a compressed version of the photo, I want to store the full size photos on the Nas drive.
I was considering the Plex option, and will now look into that further, but for some reason after running the last script my apps show as none Installed, I may have to reinstall them. - StephenBFeb 13, 2025Guru - Experienced User

Was Plex installed before? Or are you talking about the "available apps" page?
I want to emphasize that your NAS is entry-level and not that capable. You shouldn't just install every app you can. Instead you should only install the ones that you actually need.
- ItsmearronFeb 13, 2025AspirantHi yeah just looking to install the minimum and yes apps seem to have vanished from the online guidance I rans the script for zerotier, Plex was previously install as I was going to look at that route but happy to to try and get zerotier to I stall if possible. I have looked at the post that you have advised and tried downloading the file and installing it but when I run the apt install ./ Then the file name I get segmentation fault.

- ItsmearronFeb 13, 2025AspirantYeah not sure what has happened to it but it won't allow me to install any apps at all now even Plex that it previously allowed me to install

Maybe also put back the sources.list to the one you downloaded from Sandshark - just in case the script changed it.
- ItsmearronFeb 13, 2025AspirantOh mate, I can't thank you enough, I deleted the files as you suggested and replaced them with the .@Sandshark ones. Then Plex came back. I tried once again to install zero tier and this time it worked. I now have it all setup and can access my Nas online. It works a treat. I can now access it from a file browser on my android phone. Not sure what's going to be the best photo browser for android that can connect to an IP address to show the photos.
But thanks again you have both been a huge help.
