The article indicates that the 4200 (v1) is limited to 2TB drives in bays 5-12. This has always been the case for the 4200 (v1). As you have observed the 4200 v2 does not have this limitation.
If you put a 3TB disk into a 4200 (v1) it will likely show up as having roughly 0.75TB of capacity.
If you go to http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641 and look under Legacy > ReadyNAS 4200 v2 you will see that there are some 4TB disks on the list. Due to the expansion limitations of RAIDiator-x86 4.2.x however if you want to move to higher capacity disks you will likely need to create a new volume e.g. by doing a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) with the disks in place.
It is possible that you may even be able to use even higher capacity disks (at your own risk), but there are none on the compatibility list for the 4200 v2.

Perhaps Netgear should rewrite the release notes as it doesn't qualify the 2TB limit to only applying to 4200 v1.

I have looked at the Release Notes several times today and just like several previous Release Notes it does mention that the limitation applies to the V1.
Maximum 2TB drive support on 3200/4200 V1 channels 5-12 due to LSI controller limitation.

On Netgear websites it says v1 but the release notes in the zip file makes no mention of it being a v1 limitation.
