Thanks guys. The NAS in question is actually my backup NAS (serves no other purpose in life other than to receive an rsync of my main NAS).
I did resolve this eventually by rebooting the NAS, and it started resyncing the drive.
Its a bit worrying that it would refuse to resync just by hot plugging the drive though (tried repeatedly).
I do sometimes wonder why I've paid all this money for several ReadyNAS, when they seem as flaky as some linux box I've botched together myself :(
