File Owner somehow changed to “root (Unix User\root)”– Files now just READ ONLY via Windows

Sometime over the past 2 weeks, almost all of the files (50K+ photo files) in one subfolder of one share on my ReadyNAS 214 have become READ ONLY. These files are located in a hierarchy of subfolders within this share.

I found that that all of these READ ONLY files suddenly now have OWNER of “root (Unix User\root)”.  Every folder in the share, and the few files that still have write access, have OWNER of “admin (DAVESNAS\admin)” or “guest (DAVESNAS\guest”).  And every file and folder in all other shares on the RN214 have an OWNER of “admin (DAVESNAS\admin)” or “guest (DAVESNAS\guest”).

Windows 10 will NOT permit me to change the owner or permissions of the files with an OWNER of “root (Unix User\root)”.

Any suggestions to restore Full Access Control to these files would be greatly appreciated!

Configuration:

Netgear ReadyNAS 214 running latest Firmware (6.10.1)

    Host Name: DAVESNAS

    Utilization: 6.26 of 7.27 TB

PC:  Windows 10 with latest updates

  • In the admin page GUI, on the Shares menu, use the wheel icon for the share to access the Settings window.  On the File Access tab, make sure the desired owner and group and other selections are set.  Then select Reset on the left, and then the Reset permissions button.

It may take a while to complete if there are a lot of files.
