It could mean either of those. Either way, NetGear can and will deny support if you choose to use a disk outside the list.

SeaGate has recently admitted there's a firmware issue with these drives that they have a test firmware to address. I'd be inclined to blame this model drive. However if you get the same issues with a different model drive then I'd suspect a problem with the NAS chassis.
