My printer is supposedly compatible with the readynas - it appears on the compatibility list on the netgear site anyway. however it just doesn't print, the nas recognises the printer but it just hold...

That is the former official list. You must have had a link to it, as if you go to the ReadyNAS website and then go to support and Compatibility Lists, and click on Printers, it takes you to the forum page.
I looked on Newegg and they have a good selection of wired fast ethernet print servers to USB connected printers. I don't know how well they work however. Most of these will not work with an AIO, but will support basic print functions.
