When I buy a used NAS, the very first thing I do is open it up and blow out all the dust. I don't have a 104/314 to see how hard it is to remove the front panel and door assembly, but it's not too hard on most. On one's I've disassembled, the only thing wired is the display, and it's plug-in. The buttons and LEDs are just extensions to ones mounted on the circuit board underneath. It's a much bigger deal on a 6-bay unit because of the lighting and sensor panel in the door.
If the 104 and 314 are to each other like all the legacy 4-bay units are to their siblings (and it looks like they are), it can even be easier to just swap the motherboard, daughterboard (if any), and back panel.
