JE003A Baseline 24-port 1Gbps PoE Smart Switch

AKA 3Com Baseline Switch 2924-PWR Plus (boot 1.0.0.14 software 01.00.10- latest versions)
Netgear ReadyNAS 1100 (RAIDiator 4.1.10 [1.00a147])

Symptom:
Uploads run quickly
Downloads run very very slowly 300MB takes over an hour.
1,000s of Unrecovered TCP Retransmits in the NIC errors on the NAS

Steps:
Upgrade the firmware on the switch and the ReadyNAS
Replace the network lead
Run IOmeter - Read test, does not produce results, performance percentage is less than zero message in dynamo window.
Plug into alternate 100Mb switch and file download works ok and read test works.
Re connect the 3Com and set both ends of the link to 100Mbit FDX and once again the file download works as does the read test. 300MB takes under a minute to copy.
So I am now running my ReadyNAS at 100Mb FDX instead of 1,000Mb.

Can anyone suggest a way of getting this to run at the full network speed?

  • Already changed the cable to a CAT6 STP one ... even tested the one I put in just in case.

Is it possible you have a marginal cable between the NAS and the switch? Perhaps CAT5 instead of 5e or 6?

There is no harm in trying the other NIC port.
  • Hi

I looked at both sides before I lowered the speed and they both reported 1000Mb FDX, I wanted to try to force a simplex connection just in case this had an effect but there is nothing on the ReadyNAS that allows me to do this, I only have 100FDX 100HDX or auto options. I have also only tried Ethernet one, is there any mileage in trying the other port? I have not tried erasing the NAS either.... although this is a major task given the current file copy rates. I did set the MTU to 1492 from 1500 and this didn't effect things.
  • Hi,

Look at the port settings on the switch and make sure the nas and the switch properly negotiate the speed and type (full/half duplex).
