Media Streaming and Power Consumption (Pro6 vs Ultra6Plus)

In comparing the ReadyNAS Pro 6 and the ReadyNAS Ultra 6 Plus, several posts on this forum indicated that the Ultra 6 Plus had a lower power consumption than the Pro 6. However, the charts in the Product Comparison PDFs for the Business line and the Home/Prosumer line indicate that the Pro 6 and the Ultra 6 Plus both have the same power consumption (i.e., 82W). Is there a difference in power consumption of the two models?

In the Product Comparisons, both models show that they come with built-in Media Streaming services for SqueezeCenter, Apple iTunes server, ReadyDLNA, et al. However, the software manual (Radiator 4.2.17) for the Pro 6 does not document these services or show them to be built-in while the software manual (p.27) for the Ultra 6 Plus does document these services. Which is correct, the Product Comparison charts or the software documentation manual?

The Pro 6 (RNDP6000-200) is a business product whilst the Ultra 6 (RNDU6000) and Ultra 6 Plus (RNDP600U-200) are home products for the prosumer. Business features (only available on business products) tend to get advertised in manuals etc for business products whilst media streaming features get advertised for home products. So both the manuals and comparison chart are correct. The Pro 6 has all the media streaming features of the other products either pre-installed or available via addons (which can simply be installed by Add-ons > Add new in Frontview - web-interface of the ReadyNAS).

The Pro 6 has a faster CPU than the Ultra 6 Plus. See CPU Specs of the ReadyNAS. Testing has shown that if you want to transcode (convert on the fly) 1080p HD video (e.g. to stream to a mobile device such as an iPad) then you'll need a Pro 6.

The Pro 6 has a 5 year warranty and business features and faster performance (due to faster CPU), so I would go with the Pro 6.

I think it's the Ultra 6 (has Atom CPU) that's supposed to have lower power consumption, but the Atom CPU is much slower than the Pentium CPUs in the Ultra 6 Plus and Pro 6.

    Welcome to the forum!
  • Thank you. I was aware of the other differences between the Pro 6 and Ultra 6 Plus (CPU speed and warranty).

I guess there is no difference in power consumption between the Pro 6 and the Ultra 6 Plus. The Ultra 6 uses 74W compared to the 82W Pro 6 and Ultra 6 Plus. So, the power savings (8W) mentioned in other postings is really only found in the Ultra 6 which has the slower Atom CPU.

The product comparison for the Pro 6 seems to indicate that the media streaming features are pre-installed (i.e., they are not listed as being optional). I will assume that the software manual for the business product line just omitted the section on pre-installed media streaming services. I guess I won't know for sure until I get the Pro 6 and run Radiator.

Yes the media streaming features are pre-installed. The section on the media streaming services was omitted from the business software manual as its anticipated that most business users won't use those features.

Add-ons such as Skifta show under Add-ons > Available on Ultras, but not on the Pro 6 (I think). However as I mentioned you can download the add-on bin file and install it manually.
