I wanted to upgrade memory in my unit so I bought some recommended SODIMM memory which people were successfully using with ReadyNas Ultra 6. To my surprise unit I have does not use SoDIMM but rather ...

Interesting, I would have thought the Ultra 6 and Ultra 6 Plus would have used the same memory modules as the Pro 6.
First upgrading the memory is not recommended as it is not supported by Netgear and they can refuse to offer tech support for problems. Second, unless you are running a heavy batch of add ons, it is unlikely that you will note any increase in perfromance as the stock Pro 6 is capable of more than saturating the gigabit ethernet network path.
However, if you are insistent, I always recommend to anyone upgrading the memory in an computing device to remove the stock device, not the type, speed, and cl (timing) rating of the module and then match it, only a little larger. In this case if you match it directly, it may work in the second DIMM slot. Be sure to run the memory test through several times (it will take hours) with a scratch drive in the unit and only the new module to make sure it is acceptable. Ill performing memory can corrupt the OS or the data on the drives.
In my opinion, several big downsides to little upsides.
