mixing hdd speed
I have several spare desktop hdds. however they're different manufacturer /speed.
1. will NAS rn212 work with regular desktop hard drives?
2. Will it work if one hdd is 7200rpm and other 5400rpm

check the hardware hcl, as Netgear can/will deny support if you stray from it. I'd avoid Seagate DM drives and "green" drives. It's useful to google here (and other NAS sites) on the specific drive model.
If you can afford new NAS-purposed drives (Seagate VN or WDC Reds), then it's best to buy them. They work well, aren't much more expensive than desktop drives, and have better warranties.

Yes.

1. Yes. You can use disks that are not on the HCL but you use them at your own risk.
2. The 7200 RPM should operate slower than 7200 RPM since you have 5400 RPM drives in the mix. Can only go as fast as the slowest disk.

I'm not sure that's strictly true.
Reads can be done from both disks in the RAID-1 array in parallel, so you can go faster than either disk alone. Writes need to be mirrored, so they will potentially slow down some.
But real-world speed is often limited by network bandwidth anyway.
