Newbie - install a ReadyNAS 4 ULTRA
Hi There I got a Readynas ultra 4000 from my work because they do not need it. There is two disk in it. and two empty slots. I only have apple devices here at home, my router is a Time Machine...
u can download the manual. it will show u steps to do a factory default reset. this should wipe out previous configurations and give u a fresh start

Your NAS ships with OS 4 (the firmware should be 4.2.x). It can be converted to OS 6 - not sure if that has advantages for using TimeMachine backup or not. Hopefully a mac user will chime in.

Well, that depends in part on what skills you have. We can provide advice if you get stuck.
One piece of advice up front: RAID is not enough to keep your data safe. The best way to do that is to have more than one copy on different devices. After you are up and running, you should also think about your backup plan.

So there are some advantages, but Time Machine backups work fine with RAIDiator-x86 4.2.x at this time.
