Newegg Sale on Hitachi HDS5C3030ALA630
I just received a e-mail flyer from Newegg and they have the Hitachi 3TB HDS5C3030ALA630 on sale for $119.99 each.
Caution - both Newegg and Amazon have this drive listed as 0S03230 rather than as the HDS5C3030ALA630. However, looking at the image of the drive label on the Newegg site, it definitely has HDS5C3030ALA630. I ordered one from Amazon last week which got here Tuesday (for $139.99 the same price as Newegg at the time) and the Hitachi packaging definitely says 0S03230 on the OEM packaging, however that number is no where on the drive label. The drive label is definitely the HDS5C3030ALA630. I have not installed it yet, as I was waiting to get two more before I started upgrading my NVX. I ordered the next two a few minutes ago.
The Newegg listing is here. The promo code is EMCKDKA23. The Promo code gives you an additional $10 off from their new price of $129.99. The promo code expires on 6/15/11.

- PapaBear1ApprenticeUpdate: I installed the one drive I had after upgrading the NVX to 4.2.17 as a solo drive. It came up fine and is reported as HDS5C3030ALA630 in Frontview Health tab.
This confirms the drive is the one listed on the HCL and is supported in most, if not all the x-86 units. Check your list first though. - jamestx10AspirantThanks for the heads up.
- hows the drive performance, can you tell its a 5400rpm drive?
- PapaBear1ApprenticeActually haven't gotten that far. Since drive 1 was failing on my prime NVX, I shut down, pulled all four drives, and installed the 3TB as a solo to verify how the NVX would "see" the drive. While it was in there, I ran SeaTools on the then drive 1. I then shut down the NVX, removed the 3TB and re-installed drives 2-4 along with a new 1TB to re-establish redundancy. When I get the other 3TB drives, I will install them. Since I have benchmarks I established with the NVX and 4x1TB ST1000528AS drives, I will re-run them with 3x3TB HDS5C3030ALA630. However, that won't be possible until the Tuesday afternoon 6/14 as the drives won't be here until Monday afternoon 6/13.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredA good add-on to run would be the Bonnie++ add-on (http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=43747). This add-on tests the internal performance of the disks in the NAS.
- PapaBear1ApprenticeThanks for that link. I remember the discussions on it, but didn't do it at the time. I have not be eager to add any add-on apps because that is outside my comfort zone. But, maybe it's time to expand my knowledge a little more.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou don't have to install it if you don't want to. It's nice for benchmarking the internal performance of the disks after the initial sync, but you can stick to drag and drops over you network.
- PapaBear1ApprenticeAttempted to load it though Frontview as instructions said, got an error "not valid for this architecture" when attempting to load it on my NVX Pioneer running 4.2.17. Sending a PM to super-poussin.
- sander11AspirantWill these drives even be recognized with earlier firmwares? I'm sticking at 4.2.15 due to VM Ware and I thought I had a good strategy with the 2TB Hitachi drives, but $10 more for 1TB is too good to pass up.
- PapaBear1ApprenticeNo, you have to be at 4.2.16 or better for them to be recognized properly. The issue is the GPD vs MBR partitioning, and 4.2.16 is the first version of RAIDiator that can utilize GPD.
