The way I read page 11 of the Thompson manual (http://www.kabelfernsehen.ch/dokumente/ ... THG570.pdf), the modem is really what is normally called a gateway and has routing functions. It is providing you a private IP address, and the device is capable of providing IP addresses to up to 32 computers when connected to a switch.
Though there is no 192.168.1.1 device on your network, so you shouldn't be setting that address as a DNS server.
On port forwarding - if you can connect to the NAS using FTP over the internet, then there is no concerns. Generally it is best to use ftps if you can, as it is encrypted/secure. FileZilla is one PC client that supports ftps.
