NV+ (v1) chassis issue or bad HDD?

Hi all,

First off, I want to apologise for the long thread, but I wanted to include as much info as possible.
I'm having a dilemma with a disk fail event. Equipment I have is NV+ (v1) and 4x Seagate ST31500341AS 1.5Tb HDD's configured for XRAID on Raidiator 4.1.8. In the log thread below the last event is the shutdown. I have left the box shut down, removed disk 2 and have it at work performing the plethora of SeaTools tests that I must endure before submitting an RMA.

My dilemma is that all the Seatools tests are passing, as documented by the log file below:

I am currently running the Advanced Test 'Full Erase (SATA)'. After this erase I will have exhausted all the Seatools tests. No test has failed thus far, but my NV+ has complained about disk 2 multiple times and instituted automatic shutdowns. I have reservations that if I RMA the disk Seagate will charge and return it to me saying "No error code/fails, no bad disk". The other possibility is that maybe there is something wrong with my chassis or slot 2 specifically. I have no other 1.5Tb disk to test/resync with at the moment, so my only route to another disk at this point would be to get an advance RMA.

I bought my NV+ new as a diskless unit on 10 August 2009. Any help much appreciated.

Log thread below
I received an alert email with a 'resync recommended' subject:
A SATA reset has been performed on one or more of your disks that may have affected the RAID parity integrity. It is recommended that you perform a RAID volume resync from the RAID Settings tab ( accessible in the Volumes page => Volume tab in FrontView ). The resync process will run in the background, and you can continue to use the ReadyNAS in the meantime.

So I performed the resync. It started here
RAID sync started on volume C.
[Fri Apr 20 07:35:33 EDT 2012]

and ended here - almost 7 hours.
RAID sync finished on volume C. The volume is now fully redundant.
[Fri Apr 20 14:00:35 EDT 2012]

The next morning I get this alert:
Disk fail event occurred on SATA channel 2.

If the failed disk is used in a RAID level 1, 5, or X-RAID volume, please note that volume is now unprotected, and an additional disk failure may render that volume dead.

About 3 hours later on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 8:12 PM I get the 'resync recommended' email again:
A SATA reset has been performed on one or more of your disks that may have affected the RAID parity integrity. It is recommended that you perform a RAID volume resync from the RAID Settings tab ( accessible in the Volumes page => Volume tab in FrontView ). The resync process will run in the background, and you can continue to use the ReadyNAS in the meantime.

[Sat Apr 21 08:05:35 EDT 2012]

followed by these two alerts
The disk on channel 2 has failed. The NAS will automatically shutdown in 30 minutes to prevent possible data loss resulting from additional failed drives.
[Sat Apr 21 08:05:37 EDT 2012]

The disk on channel 2 has failed. Shutting down the system to prevent possible data loss resulting from additional failed drives.

It was at this point that I discovered something was up because I was trying to stream a show for my kids Saturday morning, but my WDTV couldn't see my NV+. I powered on the NV+ from the automatic shutdown and a resync started again:
RAID sync started on volume C.
[Sat Apr 21 10:46:31 EDT 2012]

and completed.
RAID sync finished on volume C. The volume is now fully redundant.

  • So, after the Full Erase completed I took the drive home and hot-added it to the chassis for one last attempt for salvation. It detected the drive pretty quick and started a resync. At time of writing this post the disk is behaving correctly. Interesting it will be to see how long for. Here is also my SMART info for disk 2:

    SMART Information for Disk 2

    Hot-remove events 0
    Lp stat events 0

  • Keep a watch on changes in the reallocated sector count and the spin retry count. Increases in both counts are associated with failing drives.

I'd suggest configuring the email alerts, so you don't need to remember to monitor them.

BTW, normal advice from Netgear is to replace disks with 50 (or more) reallocated sectors.
  • Very little reallocated sector count for that disk, only 5. I have email alerts setup since getting the NAS.

I wouldn't replace it now, I am just suggesting you keep a close watch on it.
  • I certainly intend to. Thanks for your feedback.
