Only old Harddisks on Compatibility List for ReadyNas Ultra 6
Hi, I only see old harddisks on the Harddisk Compatibility List. For example from 2011 (3TB disks). Why not recent ones? The newest 4TB disks are: Hitachi 7K4000 HUS724040ALE640 - from mid 2012...

Ok.
Just for anybody who wants to know my experience, I tried two kind of WD disks, and they both work fine in my NAS:
- WD20EFRX (the new Western Digital Red 2 TB)
- WD40EZRZ (the new Western Digital Blue 4 TB)
Bye,
Jeroen

It sounds like there probably is a problem with that disk.
Just to clarify - the ReadyNAS doesn't check the disk models against the compatibility list. It is likely your drive was DOA, so you should test it on a PC with WDC's lifeguard to confirm. Or just exchange it (ideally for a Red).
Blues are the "new" WDC Greens - not the same as the Reds. http://techreport.com/news/29251/western-digital-paints-its-green-hard-drives-blue-in-rebranding The Reds might be a bit more, but they also have better warranties.

Thank you for your quick response!
You were right: it's a DOA. Althought the Smart statistics looked fine, the test wasn't:
| Test Option: | QUICK TEST |
| Model Number: | WDC WD40EZRZ-00WN9B0 |
| Unit Serial Number: | WD-xxxxxxxx |
| Firmware Number: | 80.00A80 |
| Capacity: | 4000.79 GB |
| SMART Status: | PASS |
| Test Result: | FAIL |
| Test Error Code: | 06-Quick Test on drive 3 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 102 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 3! |
| Test Time: | 16:57:52, April 22, 2016 |
About Red and Blue (which is the new Green): I mean the hardware = stuff inside is the exactly the same; only the firmware is different. (And probably a vibration sensor.)
I don't see an advantage for a Red: TLER is not better for software RAID and the price is much higher for the Reds. One more year warranty is an advantage indeed.
But that's my opinion.
Thanks for the advice,
Regards,
Jeroen

I've seen other people assert that the hardware isn't the same, but there's precious little real information.
On vibration, one assertion is that the reds simple vibrate less than the greens (and don't have better protection) - which of course could be a difference in manufacturing tolerances. The spec on acoustic noise is 3 db lower with the Reds, which is consistent with less vibration.

Be carefull not to approach the new series with knowledge of the old series.
When comparing the new Blue and Red for 4TB we compare a WD40EZRZ with a WD40EFRX and they both have a acoustic factor of 25/28 dBA (inactive/search).

So, we have a "Harddisk Compatibility List" with the official supported / tested harddisks by Netgear. But some day the NAS systems get EOL and then no new firmware gets available anymore and probably no new disks are added to the Compatibility List anymore.
Question: is there also a list where customers can share their experiences with harddisks that do and do not work fine for certain (legacy) NAS systems? So that a list is generated by the user community with disks that do and do not give problems for a certain type of NAS.
